Inaugural Meeting October 10, 2016

We had a great first meeting Monday night!

Nine persons were in attendance and all were excited about starting a new club here in Galax. We had one autoharp player – Bruce – join us. Melissa brought her bowed psaltry as well as her dulcimer and we hope to hear her play it soon.

We were fortunate to have Jean & Michael Whitfield with us, who have led a dulcimer club in Georgia for nine years. The Whitfield’s provided valuable information on how to organize our club. Thanks, too, to Marianne Kovatch, the Chestnut Creek coordinator, for giving the club a home and helping to promote our presence. We couldn’t have done this without her!

The members got to know one another, discussed our different skill levels and playing styles, and explored how we can approach playing music together. We closed out the meeting by playing two simple songs: Old Joe Clark and Bile Dem Cabbage Down.

We look forward to meeting again next month. Between now and then, members will choose a few songs that they would like to share with the group and we will work on expanding our repertoire.

New members are welcome! If you have an interest in playing the mountain dulcimer, or if you play a compatible acoustic instrument, we invite you to join us. We meet the second Monday of every month at the Chestnut Creek School of the Arts in downtown Galax VA. from 6PM to 7PM.

  1. Thanks for the update–my husband and I may join you in February. I spoke to Marianne and learned that the club was mostly centered around mountain dulcimer; I am attempting the hammered dulcimer currently and we have plans to jump start mountain dulcimer playing at a class at the John C. Campbell Folk School in January. The dulcimer club sounds like a lot of fun–t
